I am awestruck, and I’ve got a huge deja vu sensation… Finally I figured out why: This stunning woman reminds me of “Nora” (Samantha Mathis) from the 1990 cult movie “Pump Up the Volume”. Nora’s character presented a free-spirited blend of bohemian/punk influences, and was the perfect counterpart to the movie’s male lead (Christian Slater) who operated a pirate radio station from his basement. The message of the movie was to “Steal the air” and use the power of technology to express ourselves; rather than becoming media drones with an unblinking, unthinking consumer mentality. For anyone who picks up the literary reference (consciously or subconsciously), the impact is compelling. This girl on the Verizon spot looks like the long-lost younger cousin of Nora. Their casting and filmography perfectly evokes the message of this ad. Dynamic individualism meets passionate self-expression. WAY TO GO Verizon!! Even if I hated your service I would be forced to applaud your advert. And I don’t hate your service. =)
