Slamdance Film Festival: Sweet 16 (Promo)

The Slamdance Film Festival is an American independent film festival held in Utah every year since 1995, at the same time as the famous Sundance Film Festival. Slamdance’s organisers believe that Sundance’s success has marred its role as a representative of true independent cinema, leaving a void that Slamdance has been able to fill, a fact that is wholeheartedly recognised by the industry.
This year the festival celebrates it 16th anniversary, and boolab has created the titles and promo piece for this new edition. The Ebeling Group, the American production house that is now representing us exclusively in several countries, including the US, since 2009, enlisted us to develop this piece. Directed and scripted by Nico Casavecchia, the piece, entitled Sweet 16, uses metaphor to evoke the essence of the festival’s birthday. At sixteen, on the edge of maturity, Slamdance needs to reaffirm its role as the spirit of American independent cinema.
The metaphor is expressed in the transition from childhood to adolescence of a girl who dances herself into a trance, from which she emerges entirely transformed, revealing her true potential. As commissioned, this is a highly cinematographic piece that combines film with stop-motion and visual effects.
